Wallpaper* is rolling out an extra issue!

Design and architecture magazine, Wallpaper* is adding another issue in its monthly calendar, so since 2008 will sell 12 issues instead of 11 that had since 2007. What made it’s bosses for this change? Obviously during 2007 it saw a boom in the advertising aspect of it, which was a record for Wallpaper*’s history.
Here is how it used to be: Since its launch in 1996 the international design lifestyle journal published 10 issues a year. Earlier 2007, it split its Dec/Jan issue, meaning it would come out 11 times a year. Sometime in Sept 2007, the magazine owners, IPC, said that it would publish 12 issues a year from 2008 and split its June/July issue. And thats what happen. Today we can purchase 12 issues. However, on its website it clearly says that if you subscribe to it for the first time you will receive 12 issues. Does that mean that if you are not a regular consumer of Wallpaper* you wont be able to buy the 12th issue? Dont know, I will have to wait and see.
The publishing director, Andrew Black, said “Wallpaper* is truly going from strenght to strenght, both editorially and commercially”. “Subscription levels are at their highest level and our advertising is up 42% on 2006, a year record” he added.
Wallpaper* has a total worldwide circulation of 112,871 last year, including more that 25,000 subscriptions.
Adding to all these interesting information, Wallpaper* this year is coming with “themes” for the june and July issues. Apparently the June issue theme will be “work” and July theme will be “secret elite” … Looking forward for those issues!
Domus magazine-statistics (part1)
I have looked into two brands so far, in order to see which one will provide me with more information. I’ve looked into Wallpaper* and Domus magazine.
Domus is one of the most influential design magazines in the world and it is also one of the oldest design magazines. The first issue began in 1928 in Milan by a very influential architect Gio Ponti and a bussiness man (publisher), Gianni Marzocchi, whose family still owns the business until today. The first issue of the monthly magazine Domus came out on 15 January 1928 with the sub-heading: ‘Architecture and interior design of the modern house for the city and the country’.
“Over the course of its over seventy year history, the sub-headings of the magazine have changed slightly to reflect the demands and interest of the times but the aim of Domus has always remained that of creating a privileged insight into identifying the style of a particular age”. source:http://www.edidomus.it/Ed/menuverticale/domus.cfm?vis=1&lingua=_eng
DOMUS: Domus has good claims to being the essential document of Italian design and architecture, embodyings all the phases of its subject. Emergence in the 1930s and a troubled deal with politics, glorious achievement during postwar, not very famous about styling in 1980 and an afterwards successful settling into the present internationalised global market of things.

20 Domus 1928-1999: The Quintessential Works of Modernism
Some time in 2007, Domus Magazine launched a gigantic set of their anthology: Domus 1928-1999: The Quintessential Works of Modernism. Domus has this nice and strong approach of showing art, architecture and design at the same time because of the belief in the inter-locking discipline that has a strong political responsibility going on. The 71 years of modern design are portrayed all together, going from art to urban design, architecture, interior graphic, products and materials. It is partly an encyclopedia of design that gives you the idea of what is going on during that time of each issue.
The Website: The Domus site was excists since 1995 and deals with architecture, design communication and art. The contents vary, from historical pieces to highly current events, with a rich selection of reviews covering products on the market as well as the magazine index. In order to be able to access most of the information, the archives, index etc you must subscribe to the magazine, for FREE. A very good move although this means that everybody can access it and it doesnt give you any special privilages and exclusivities.
The CDROM: “Protagonists of Italian Design” is a CDROM which in 19995 looked at a production and the design debate through eight designers. Since 1998 the complete version of each year of Domus has also been available on CDROM.

A Bit of History about Wallpaper* magazine
The magazine was launched in 1996, and from waht everyone says is the worlds no. 1 global design destination. It’s brand profile argues that it delivers the core values of modern living to a new generation of urban nomads. It aims at an international audience and is all about design, fashion, travel and technology. Its a lifestyle magazine and is a leader in consumer magazines.
The original tagline for Wallpaper* when it was launched in 1996 was “the stuff that surrounds you”. It was deceptively dismissive and hard to find stuff, very chic items presented in the magazine’s oversized glossy pages. The magazine was an exact representation of the places, people, things that surrounded Tyler Brule, the creator of Wallpaper*. His first aim when he launched the magazine was to please consumers that had the same interests as him. A style guide with a unique visual aesthetic aimed at well-travelled consumers between the age of 20s to 30s. The magazine was never intended for the mass market. Brule’s original plan was to keep it upmarket and to play with it as long as people were interested. In its first year, the magazine found itself on the edge of bankruptcy just as media titans were begining to take notice. Based on the magazine’s potential rather than its performance, Time Inc. bought Wallpaper* for $1.6 million after just 4 issues. This development allowed Brule to do all the palns he had for Wallpaper*. He turned it into a style bible, making unique use of illustrations and creative layouts. However, suddenly the magazine’s signature style was comeing up everywhere, as a cheap imitation most of the times. In 2001, Time Inc. bought IPC Media and management at the magazine changed.
A former Wallpaper* fanatic argues that the magazine is in transition for what it lost with Brule’s departure and that he dont relates to the editorial content anymore. Characteristicly he said: Wallpaper* without Brule is very much like Apple without Steve Jobs.
